Are outliers not the min and max? The absolute minimum and maximum are the actual extremes of the data. However, in a boxplot, the whiskers only extend to the lowest and highest typical values within a mathematically expected range (Tukey's Fences). Any values falling outside this range are plotted as individual outliers.
